Pool Service FAQ

The method of salt-water chlorination uses dissolved salt (2,500–6,000 ppm) as a storage medium for the pool’s chlorination device. The chlorine generator (also known as a salt cell, salt generator, or salt chlorinator) produces hypochlorous acid (HCIO) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) by electrolysis in the presence of dissolved salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) in the presence of dissolved salt or sodium chloride (NaCl). As a result, a saltwater pool is not necessarily chlorine-free; it merely uses a chlorine generator rather than adding chlorine directly.

An organic compound called a chlorine stabilizer protects chlorinating materials from the light. It’s also known as cyanuric acid, and it’s also known as “conditioner.” Pool owners who use balanced water have a distinct advantage over those who use unstabilized water. For example, if a pool is exposed to the sun for 35 minutes, the water will lose half of its HOCI (the hypochlorous acid that forms when chlorine is dissolved in water and that is responsible for the disinfecting power of chlorine.)

Absolutely. Dirt, pollen, and algae can naturally accumulate in your pool’s crevices, so use a pool brush regularly to break them up. Routine churning of the water (from cleaning or swimming) allows the filter to absorb the debris until it settles.

The single most critical factor in maintaining the cleanliness of your swimming pool is your pool filter. For full circulation and debris removal, a filter should be running at all times. It is strongly recommended that you exercise for at least 8 hours a day during the summer and 4 to 6 hours a day during the winter.

With a smartphone you can control pool and spa service, as well as heater and blower control, with a push of a button. There’s no need to go out to the pool equipment to switch on the heater or the spa! These and other operations can also be controlled remotely from your smartphone or tablet.

Algae in swimming pools is mostly caused by phosphate. All living organisms, including algae, require phosphorus and nutrients to survive and thrive. Rain, runoff from lawns and gardens, fertilizers, birdseed, plant material, dust, suntan oil, and leaves are some of the sources of phosphate in pool water. Both of these sources will eventually build up and raise the phosphate concentration in the water, promoting progressive algae development. Phosphate removers are available to lower the phosphate level in your swimming pool water below 100 parts per million (ideally, you want it as close to a zero reading as possible).

The total alkalinity (TA) of water is a measure of its resistance to pH changes. The TA of a pool shows how much alkali (not to be confused with alkaline) is present in the water in the form of bicarbonates, carbonates, and hydroxides. A proper TA level aids in the control of pH bounce, surface staining, and pool equipment corrosion.
By automating all labor-intensive tasks including sanitization, pH balancing, washing, and filtration, automation takes the work out of pool and spa ownership. There are a variety of systems available, some of which can be controlled using your smartphone.
